Ellen Vesterdal

Mezzo-Soprano

Return to Section Leader Bios

Biography

In his review of The Consul on CBC radio, Richard Ouzounian stated "...Ellen Vesterdal is a striking presence." This may not be apparent when Ellen is hidden under her choir gown, but many will remember her famous (or infamous) cabaret performance of "Hey Big Spender". For the past 9 years Ellen has been a valued section leader and soloist with the ESG choir.

As a versatile high lyric mezzo, spirits, animals, boys and femme fatales all fall easily into her performance range.  She began her career in Alberta as the mother in her high-school musical production of Cheaper-by-the-Dozen, (and that has pretty much been her motto ever since.) After obtaining her music degree from UBC, Ellen moved to Toronto to find life, love, and work in the big city (well, SOME things have worked out). Ellen has sung with Toronto Operetta Theatre, Opera in Concert and Opera Anonymous, and has been a member of the Canadian Opera Company Chorus since 1998. She is well-known as a singer, performer and educator and has furthered her education with extensive vocal and dramatic studies. This past summer Ellen performed the role of "Dorabella" in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte with Mehgan Atchison in Halifax.

Recently, Ellen created and performed a cabaret, based on her love-life: Revered, Reviled, Revived….A Woman’s Journey Through Love. She is a member of the newly formed "Kurt Weill Trio" with Brahm Goldhamer and Mathew Zadow. Ellen plans a recital in the near future – watch for details on her website: www.ellenvesterdal.com.
